Infertility has been a huge problem for many centuries. It’s one of the worst issues any couple could ever face. But thanks to modern medicine, infertility nowadays is treatable and can be corrected. One of the breakthrough treatments that have been discovered to treat infertility is the IUI Infertility treatment.

The History of IUI Infertility Treatment

The first ever fertility treatment that pioneered all other treatments is called the Artificial Insemination (AI). It dates back to as early as the 1900s. At the time, all you need to perform this procedure was some healthy sperm and something resembling or similar to a turkey baster.

Today, the sperm must be specially washed and placed carefully in the woman’s uterus. The procedure has also adopted a new name that is Intrauterine Insemination or IUI infertility treatment. The reason for the change is because AI can presently be performed in four different locations of the reproductive system, each one having a respective term: the vagina (intravaginal insemination), the cervix (intracervical insemination), the uterus and fallopian tubes (intratubal insemination).  While the term Artificial Insemination can pretty much cover all four procedures, Intrauterine Insemination or IUI infertility treatment is more specific and which literally means putting sperm in the uterus.

What is IUI infertility treatment, then?

IUI infertility treatment, in general, is done by putting concentrated sperm into the woman’s uterus through the cervix. The doctor will first determine if you are ovulating by performing an ultrasound or with the aid of an ovulation detection kit. After making sure that you are ovulating and ready for conception, the doctor will then take a sample sperm from your partner which will then be specially “washed”. Washing the sperm is a process done to produce the strongest sperm by using a little amount of special fluid. Once the sperm is ready, a catheter or a tube will be used as a channel in order to properly place the sperm into your uterus through the cervix.  If the implantation is successful, you will most likely get pregnant in more or less a period of two weeks.

How long does an IUI infertility treatment last?

The whole procedure of IUI infertility treatment usually lasts at about less than an hour. That is the procedure itself. But prior to that—specifically a week before you ovulate—you will be prescribed by your doctor to start taking fertility drugs to prepare your body for a possible pregnancy. Also, depending on the cause of infertility, a lot of women undergo three to six IUI infertility treatments before achieving pregnancy or trying out for another fertility treatment if the IUI infertility treatment failed.

Is IUI infertility treatment for you?

Before you can confirm that IUI infertility treatment is what you really need, an official doctor’s order is necessary. This means that a thorough medical check-up has to be performed first in your reproductive system to know for sure that you are qualified to undergo an IUI infertility treatment. If you have sperm allergy or if your partner has low sperm count and motility, then you are a likely candidate. The motility of your partner’s sperm is important for you to conceive. Motility is the ability of a sperm to move in the direction of the uterus and being able to make that long journey towards the awaiting egg and fertilize it.

How successful is an IUI infertility treatment?

The success rate of an IUI infertility treatment actually depends on the severity of you and your partner’s fertility problem. Age is also an important factor to determine if you can achieve pregnancy with IUI. The older you get, the faster your fertility rate declines. So if you want to make certain that IUI will work, do it as early as you can or before reaching the age of thirty and above. Even this is not exactly a hundred percent assurance that the procedure will be successful. Couples who have resorted to an IUI infertility treatment have a 5 to 20 percent chance of conceiving. If you want to increase your chances, taking fertility drugs together with the procedure will help a lot.

Many couples would try just about anything to conceive. There is nothing wrong with that. Make sure that you have been properly examined and diagnosed by a qualified physician before deciding on any fertility treatment.
